Portable Spectral Services

Project overview

Portable Spectral Services (PSS) is a West‑Perth‑based organisation specialising in analytical spectral technology.  Founded in 2011 and now a unique provider of portable XRF, micro‑XRF, infrared and TXRF instruments, PSS needed a website capable of showcasing its extensive product range and supporting clients across mining, environmental, archaeological and manufacturing sectors. PrimeSites Digital was engaged to redesign the website, migrate it to a flexible Divi/WordPress platform and provide long‑term hosting and support.

Client overview

PSS is a staff‑owned company with a focus on innovation and sustainability. They offer sales and hire of spectral instruments, in‑house analysis using portable XRF, SWIR/NIR, Raman, FTIR and micro‑XRF, official Bruker distribution, maintenance and repair services and portable XRF licensing courses.  They serve industries including mining and exploration, environmental monitoring, oil and gas, archaeology, arts and conservation, precious metals, agriculture and manufacturing.

Industry context

The spectral technology industry demands accuracy, speed and non‑destructive analysis.  PSS differentiates itself by providing chemical‑free, non‑destructive instruments and training clients to generate reliable data.  The website must communicate these technical strengths while remaining approachable for customers unfamiliar with spectrometry.

Website goals

  1. Showcase products and services – organise handheld XRF, micro‑XRF, infrared and TXRF instruments for sale and hire and promote analysis, maintenance and training services.
  2. Deliver excellent performance – ensure fast loading, responsive design and high Core Web Vitals scores.
  3. Support sustainability messaging – highlight non‑destructive, chemical‑free analysis  and PSS’s Going Green initiatives.
  4. Improve lead generation – integrate CRM forms and track conversions for demos, hire requests and training enquiries.
  5. Provide scalability – allow PSS to add new products, case studies and sectors without technical debt.

Services provided

  • Strategy & discovery: requirements gathering, competitor analysis and user journey mapping.
  • Design & development: custom Divi child theme, WooCommerce implementation for product sales and hire, integration of analysis and training pages, responsive mobile design, accessible navigation and content architecture.
  • Performance optimisation: caching, image optimisation, database tuning and Cloudflare CDN configuration.
  • Search optimisation: technical SEO fixes, XML sitemaps, clean URL structure and advanced schema (Service, Organization, WebPage, Article, Product) to improve search visibility.
  • Ongoing support: security updates, uptime monitoring, performance audits, quarterly content reviews and assistance with new product launches.

Technical highlights

  • Complex product taxonomy – structured products by instrument type (handheld XRF, micro‑XRF, infrared, TXRF) and sub‑models using WooCommerce variable products and custom taxonomies.
  • Hire booking – built an intuitive booking interface with dynamic pricing ranges for each instrument, integrated with WooCommerce bookings and calendar availability.
  • CRM integration – connected forms to PSS’s CRM for automated lead capture and newsletter sign‑ups.
  • Performance & security – used Cloudflare for caching and DDoS protection, implemented lazy loading for images and enforced SSL across the site.
  • Accessibility & sustainability – enhanced contrast, added alt text and structured headings; emphasised non‑destructive analysis and sustainable practices throughout the site.

UX/mobile/performance improvements

The new site delivers a simplified navigation, sticky demo request button and improved readability across devices.  Mobile users can quickly call PSS, submit enquiry forms and browse product categories.  Performance optimisations result in fast page loads and high scores in Google PageSpeed Insights.

Long‑term support relationship

PrimeSites continues to host and maintain the PSS website, providing security patches, plugin updates and performance monitoring.  We conduct quarterly strategy reviews with PSS to align website improvements with business goals.  New products, sectors and case studies are added regularly, ensuring the site remains current.

Local relevance

Although PSS serves clients worldwide, the portfolio emphasises its base in West Perth. Local references and areaServed schema connect the project to the Perth tech ecosystem, strengthening local search results and demonstrating our commitment to supporting Western Australian organisations.

Operational complexity and integrations

PSS operates with multiple teams: sales, hire, analysis and training.  The website integrates these functions through WooCommerce, bookings, CRM and portal login, requiring careful coordination between WordPress, plugin developers and external systems.  PrimeSites provided custom PHP to link product availability to booking calendars and implemented caching strategies compatible with the dynamic content.

SEO/performance work

Our SEO approach included keyword research around portable XRF, micro‑XRF, spectral technology and non‑destructive analysis.  We improved URL structures, added internal linking, implemented advanced schema (Service, Organization, Product, WebPage) and optimised headings and meta tags.  Performance improvements included minifying scripts and styles, enabling HTTP/2 server push, using WebP images and applying Cloudflare Argo for geographic routing.
