A website can communicate clearly to human visitors while still leaving important relationships open to interpretation by search engines.

A visitor may immediately understand that a page describes a local business, a service, a client project or an article. Search systems must identify those relationships from the content, links, page structure and technical markup.

Schema markup provides an additional machine-readable description of that information.

It can identify entities such as:

  • a business or organisation
  • a local professional service
  • a person or author
  • a service
  • a product
  • an article
  • a review
  • a frequently asked question
  • a breadcrumb trail
  • an event

What structured data means

Schema is not a ranking shortcut

Adding a large amount of schema does not automatically improve rankings.

Google specifically recommends adding Organisation structured data to the home page to help it understand and distinguish an organisation.

Local Business or Professional Service

A business serving a defined geographic area may use a more specific business type where appropriate.

The markup might include:

  • business name
  • website
  • address
  • telephone number
  • area served
  • opening hours
  • logo
  • relevant social profiles

The selected type must accurately reflect the business. A consultancy should not use a restaurant or retail-store type simply because it offers more properties.

Service

Service schema can describe a genuine service offered by the business.

  • the service name
  • the service provider
  • the geographic area served
  • a concise service description

Test and monitor the markup

Schema should be checked after implementation and again after major theme, plugin or template changes.

  • syntax errors
  • missing required properties
  • duplicate entities

A tool may report that JSON-LD is valid while the strategy is still poor. Technical validity does not guarantee that the selected schema is accurate or useful.
